SUNNYSIDE is the name of a neighborhood in the Mid-island region of the New York City borough of Staten Island.
Known for the two large city parks-Silver Lake Park and Clove Lake Park. SUNNYSIDE was named after a boarding house that was built in 1889. The area was previously known as Clovenia, which was referred to as Clove Valley, from which Clove Road got its name. Clove Road runs from West Brighton to Grasmere and is the neighborhood's main thoroughfare. Clove Road forms the northern boundary of Sunnyside, separating it from Grymes Hill.
Before the installation of cable service, Sunnyside was known to have the worst television reception on Staten Island, because of its proximity to Grymes Hill, Emerson Hill, and Castleton Hill.
The campus of the College of Staten Island was once located in Sunnyside at the foot of Emerson Hill in 1993. The campus was moved to the Willowbrook area on the grounds of the former Willowbrook State School. The Michael petrides Center, an advanced-placement high school took the place of the College. This school is also used as an evacuation site for floods or other emergencies.
Many residents of SUNNYSIDE are civil service workers, which is typical of many Mid-Island neighborhoods.
